The Tribal Development Department (TDD) works under the aegis of Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) set up in 1999 after bifurcation of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It is nodal Ministry for overall policy, planning and coordination of programmes for development of Scheduled Tribes (ST). The TDD is entrusted with integrated socio-economic development of the 1.05 crore ST population in the state in a coordinated and planned manner. 

Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) Scheme
It is a Government of India (GoI) scheme for  providing quality education and holistic development of tribal children in both academic and extra-curricular domain through residential schools across India. It is one of the flagship schemes of the MoTA, introduced in the year 1997-98. EMRSs are set up in States/UTs with grants under Article 275(1) of the Constitution of India. Over a period, the EMRSs have evolved as an island of excellence in the remote tribal hinterlands attracting large number of tribal children.

About  Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS)

The EMRS are set up in the context of setting the trend of delivering quality residential schooling for the promotion of education in all areas of tribal habitations in the country. The core objectives of EMRS  is to provide quality middle and high level education to ST students in the remote tribal areas. It is envisaged that the EMRS will not only to enable the ST students to achieve academic excellence, but also open aspirational avenues for higher education and successful career opportunities in various fields. 

Maharashtra has 24 EMRSs with enrolment of over 5000 students. The EMRSs are managed by Maharashtra State Tribal Public Schools Society (MTPSS). These are situated in four major tribal regions of Maharashtra Nashik, Thane, Nagpur and Amravati. The EMRSs impart education in English medium from class 6th to 12thand are affiliated to CBSE Board, Delhi. There are equal number of boys and girls in each class. The schools receive funds through MTPSS which receives grant in aid from MoTA under the article 275 (1) of the Constitution of India.
